I was able to resist when Bandai released the Souchaku Henshin Gavan and the other Space Sheriffs. They were nice... but something was still missing which I couldn't really put my finger on.

Now, Bandai/Namco has come together to form a company called Megahouse and guess what the first 3 releases are in their Actionworks line? That's right, new versions of the Space Sheriffs. Gavan, Sharivan and Shaider are all scheduled to be released starting from October! Now this version of Gavan, I must say, looks much better. It can be posed in more dynamic poses and the proportions are much better.

Retailing at 2500 yen, these are fully poseable and stand about 12cm tall, which seems to indicate they are about the same size as the previous Souchaku Henshin releases.

Damn. I should stop looking at toy websites...

Now this one really came out of the left field. The next Soul of Chogokin (GX-40) is apparently Baikanfu from Machine Robo: The Revenge of Cronos. The original toy was released in 1986 and it was yet another one of those that I distinctly remembered drooling over but never managed to get my grubby hands on.

Baikanfu is like Gordion, where there are 3 different-sized robots, all nested inside each other. However, Baikanfu looked much cooler than Gordion.

The original toy wasn't poseable at all, due to the gimmick. If Bandai manages to make this upcoming release in any way poseable, it'd be damn hard for me to resist.

Another month and more has been revealed about the upcoming Fine Molds Y-Wing Fighter. And man... it's soooooo pretty... just take a look below! Pictures courtesy of Hobby Link Japan's Shizoula Hobby Show 2007.

This is a must get for me since I actually prefer the Y-Wing design than the X-Wing design heh. There's just something about the workhorse spacecraft that appeals to me. Speaking of the X-Wing, Fine Molds also showcased a 1/48 version of the spacecraft at the show. Now this one wa a surprise for me.

No details if this is just a scale-up of the 1/72 X-Wing but it will make an impressive showcase in anyone's display case. This one is coming out 4th quarter 2007.

Projects › Grumman F-14D Tomcat 'VF-101 Grim Reapers'
Almost exactly one year after I stopped modeling, I'm gearing up for more pain and suffering. This time a lot has changed. I'm in Jakarta. I don't have a modeling room. I don't have a compressor nor airbrush (at least, not yet). But I figure that shouldn't stop me from trying to build model kits. So here's the challenge: build an aircraft kit with some sort of camouflage without having to resort to the compressor and airbrush. Back to basics... so to speak...

So what did I pick? The Hasegawa new mold Tomcat kit. I decided to model the VF-101 bird since:

  1. It is a trainee a/c so it's relatively clean which means less painting process
  2. The scheme I want to do only has 2 colors for the fuselage and both are variations of grey

My modeling desh is actually a foldout table people can use to eat or do stuff on the bed. As you can see, it's actually pretty big so there's a bit of room for modeling. Please ignore the bedsheet heh...

To lessen the hassle of not having a dedicated modeling area, I decided to do as many subassemblies as possible then paint all in one shot in the backyard with spray cans. Hand painted stuff I will resort to Tamiya Acrylic paints as these are the least toxic and clean up easily with water. For these, I will also attempt as many subassemblies as possible first.

After about an hour's work in the night, I got the cockpit done. What's left is painting and the main control panels can be attached.

PE parts are glued with super glue and the whole thing will be handpainted. I'll probably add seatbelts onto the ejection seats as they are quite bare.

So the newest Gundam series is called Gundam OO (read: double-O). Looks to be yet another SEED-ish looking anime although it's not set in the same universe. Shots of the first batch of models have popped up on the Internet besides the 30 second advertisement that was released a few weeks ago.

As per tradition, Kunio Okawara still has a hand in designing the main Gundams and it shows. He's usual odd lines (in my mind anyway) are still present. Although I must say they look a bit more 'super robot' than previous Gundams.

For now, I'm kinda ambivalent towards the designs but that is normal for Okawara designs. They tend to look better when animated. The Gundams we see here (from left to right, top to bottom): Gundam Exia, Gundam Dynames, Gundam Kyrios and Gundam Virtue are supposedly the 'hero' Gundams. Looks generic enough. A melee fighter, a long range sniper, an agile flyer and a heavy artillery gunner. These are now the archetypes for Gundams it seems stretching back to Gundam Wing. I don't really understand why they have to do Gundam this way to be honest.

But hey, Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny have been OK in the ratings so they must be doing something right. I'm just a moody old cumudgeon...

I'm by no means an Okawara basher since I liked the Strike Gundam and lots of other Gundam designs he did, but these look too generic and 'super robot' to my liking. Kinda dilutes the 'realistic robot' genre that Gundam originally pioneered.

Exciting news from CM's Corporation: Chogokin Legioss and Thread from Genesis Climber Mospeada! Both perfectly transformable and will be packaged as one. Damn... another must get for me when they come out.

To make the deal even sweeter, the promo page has pics of a Ride Armor too! And unlike the weirdly proportioned 1980s toy, this one manages to look good in both forms!

Being a Mospeada fanboy, I'm glad they are finally making properly done toys of this often overlooked series.

I love this. My friend sent me this image of size comparisons of Super Robots. It's just too cool for words. Just check it out. I'm actually not sure what that super giant robot at the back is. Gun Buster perhaps? Anyway, the lot of tiny robots on the right are Gundams. Too bad they don't have the Macross mecha in this pic.

Kotobukiya is not letting up with their HMM Zoids releases. Bugger. More cool-ass Zoids that I won't be able to resist. This time, it's the stars of the Zoids: Chaotic Century anime: the Blade Liger and the Geno Breaker.

Now what am I going to do with the original releases of these things? Double bugger. The bottom picture is probably what the final colors of the Zoids will be. No suprises there since they are of the original colors.

I actually hope they spew out recolors of these things, so I can catch a breather and not have to buy new releases... hehe

Articles › Previews

Italeri kits can be hit or miss but so far, I've been lucky. The previous Italeri kit (the A-6E Intruder) I previewed looked to be a good kit. What about this one? The kit comes in the typical Italeri side opening box. There are two main trees of parts and 1 clear canopy tree in a plastic bag. Not much protection I must say, but at least there are no parts that fell off the tree.
